Introduction: The Sphere as a Symbol of Essence

In my ceramics studio, I create a series of spherical figures that represent the essence of things. you can find in my portfolio how the sphere is always present.

The sphere is a perfect shape, without beginning or end, that represents unity and totality. It is a symbol of infinity, eternity, and perfection.

The Chinese character "yuan"

yuan Chinese character

In Chinese culture, the character “yuan” (圆) represents the sphere or circle. This character has a very deep meaning, as it is associated with harmony, unity, and perfection. The yuan is also a symbol of nature, as it can be found in many forms in the natural world, such as in flowers, stars, and moons.

I believe that art is a way to capture the essence of things. The spherical figures I create are an expression of my search for perfection and unity. They are a reminder that everything is connected, and that we are all part of something greater than ourselves.

The Magic of Spheres in Design

Since ancient times, humans have been fascinated by the spherical shape. This shape, with no beginning or end, that is balanced from any angle, has been a universal symbol of perfection and totality. In the world of visual design, spheres offer a range of possibilities that can elevate any aesthetic proposal to the next level.

When we think of “visual design and spheres,” we immediately connect with the idea of continuity and cohesion. By implementing spheres in any design proposal, a sense of harmony and balance is created, providing a pleasing aesthetic to the human eye. The simplicity of the sphere also allows it to be a versatile element, capable of blending in with a variety of color palettes and design styles, from the most minimalist to the most elaborate.

Spheres also play with perception. When present in a design, they automatically draw the eye, becoming a focal point. This characteristic is especially useful when we want to highlight any particular element or message. Additionally, spheres can be used in repetitive patterns, creating rhythm and movement in a static design, or they can also be used in isolation, providing a striking contrast with other visual elements.

Spheres in Art

Spheres have left their mark on universal art throughout history. Here are a few examples:

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Although there are no spheres as such in the painting, the use of sfumato creates a sense of roundness and volume in the face and hands. This is an example of how the sphere can be hinted at rather than explicitly stated.
  • Arnaldo Pomodoro’s “Sphere Within Sphere” sculpture. Located in various places around the world, these sculptures feature a giant sphere with another sphere inside, demonstrating the versatility and depth that this element can achieve.
  • The works of M.C. Escher. Although Escher did not always use spheres, he played with perception and geometry, making his works, such as “Hand with Reflecting Sphere,” present this shape in surprising and unique ways.

Spheres in visual design are not just an aesthetic element, but a symbol with a wealth of meaning and creative potential. Whether in painting, sculpture, or graphic design, spheres will continue to fascinate and draw attention for their perfection and versatility.

CAPTURING THE ESSENCE in contemporary art

Contemporary art also seeks to capture the essence of things. Contemporary artists use a variety of techniques and materials to create works that convey a message or an idea. Contemporary art can be provocative, challenging, or simply beautiful, but it always seeks to make the viewer reflect on the world around them.

I believe that giving art is a way to show someone you care. A work of art is something that can last a lifetime, and that will always remind the person who received it of the person who gave it to them. In addition, art can be a personalized gift, that captures the essence of the person you are giving it to.

If you are looking for a special gift, consider giving a work of art. A piece of art is a unique and memorable gift that is sure to be appreciated by the person who receives it.
